While no two rugs are identical soil is often the same.
We start with dry soil removal, dry soil is a term for silt & clay-like soil that settles into the foundation of woven area rugs from normal day-to-day use.
On the left is a Persian Gabbeh before dusting/dry soil removal and on the right after dry soil removal before washing.
In some cases, we spend more time removing these soils than actual washing.
Failure to adequately remove these silt-like soils before cleaning inhibits the removal of other soils during washing.
Our workshop in SE Portland is a specialty, in-plant facility for cleaning oriental and area rugs.
We specialize in rug cleaning services for oriental rugs and area carpets, not in-home carpet cleaning.
The methods and equipment we use are specific to oriental rugs these are are not portable, and cannot be mimicked or approximated by in-home carpet extraction or steam cleaning systems.
In-home rug cleaning fails to remove most soils in oriental rugs and often, leaves cleaning residues.
The heat and detergency can be damaging to handwoven rugs and specifically natural fibers and de-stablize dyes.
The knowledgeable and talented staff at Renaissance Rug Cleaning love working with rugs and related textiles and more importantly, we know how to repair oriental rugs properly.
We will guide you through various options to preserve the integrity of your woven rug; new or antique rugs, a repair can restore its beauty, maintain the value, and keep it usable for generations.
We avoid the use of machine binding, surging, and adhesives on hand-woven textiles.
These shortcuts, while economical, often destroy the aesthetics, value, integrity, collectability, and reduce the longevity of fine rugs.
Rug pads improve safety by reducing the possibility of tripping and slippage on slick floors such as hardwood and tile.
Rug pads cushion the impact of foot traffic.
Foot traffic combined with soil in a carpet's foundation is another element that causes wear.
The abrasion of soils in the foundation of rugs is reduced by the shock-absorbing effect of rug padding.
Pads absorb some of the force from foot traffic walking on rugs and help extend the life of rugs in high-traffic use areas.
Rug padding provides a barrier for liquid spills such as drinks and pet accidents and also reduces the possibility of these liquids going through the rug and warping or discoloring hardwood floors.
Vacuuming helps to remove soils that can build upon the surface of a rug and work their way into the foundation.
These embedded soils cut rug fibers when walked on and over time result in discoloration, deterioration, and noticeable wear.
However, vacuums with rotating beater bars (pictured above) are not appropriate for all rugs and can cause damage by sucking up the end fringes causing damage or additional damage to the already compromised area on a rug, so care should be used.
Thin rugs like Kilims or old worn Persian rugs can be pulled into a beater bar-style vacuum so they should be vacuumed with suction only canister-style vacuum, and if small they can be taken outside and gently shaken by hand.
Moth prevention is key; once wool moths have a foothold in your home, they can be hard to control. Wool moth damage can cause small localized damage or destroy entire rugs costing thousands of dollars in damage. Moths seek out protein fiber-based textiles rugs, wool clothing, and even feather items.
You can rely on our services for pet urine removal in Portland, we deal with pet accidents all the time.
If the spot is a small fresh accident.
However, if the spot is old or the rug is saturated to the foundation or the colours are unstable and bleeding the rug needs to be removed from the home for successful urine removal.
Pet accidents on rugs can damage fibers and dyes the longer the area is not cleaned.
It's important to address accidents in a timely manner but also to address them properly.

Val did a great job patching up a 3-day old rug that my dogs chewed a hole in. It is unnoticeable! Thanks Val!

I brought an large ~12'x14' rug in to be cleaned. I had no idea about the real condition of the rug, but I did know it was old and not in the best shape. Unfortunately the rug tore while being cleaned. Renaissance informed me of the problem and expertly repaired it to the point that I can't even tell where the damage was. It looks the best it ever has. I will definitely use them again.

Val and Randy were amazing! Very responsive and great communication. The rug looked great when it came back. They are experts, knew where my rug had come from and how to clean it (what to do and what to not do). The deliver guys were great too.

I've been bringing my carpets here for years... except one of them that hadn't been cleaned in 25 years and had experienced a lot of 'pet upheavals.' It wasn't a high-end carpet and the backing was just about gone.
And they cleaned it as though it was a precious gem. It came out without a scratch and all its colors back and all the old animal traces gone, gone, gone.
Also, really nice people. Also, gave me advice about how to hand clean another carpet that i couldn't afford to get cleaned.
Also, showed me around their process for cleaning and repairing. Fascinating!

Renaissance is the premier rug washing and restoration company in the NW. They are the only company I would recommend for hand washing & rug repair in Portland Oregon. Renaissance has saved my rugs from, wine spills, pet pee, coffee stains, a green smoothie, and a piece of chocolate cake that fell off the table. Without Renaissance, my rugs would be stained and forlorn. They even repaired the side of a rug that my dog chewed on and now I can't even tell where the tear occurred. It was a rug miracle!

The owner Randy has a deep knowledge of carpets and is able to give honest verbal and written appraisals for insurance and replacement.

Portland is lucky to have such a reliable resource for area rugs and carpets.

I have been doing business with the folks at Renaissance Rug Cleaning for years. Their quality and great customer service continue to exceed my expectations. Even with three big dogs at home (one being a husky whose shedding seems endless) that love playing outside in the mud on a regular basis, my rugs always sparkle after I bring them home from Renaissance Rug Cleaning. Thanks again for taking on that challenge and allowing me to keep both my rugs and my dogs! Axle, Millie, and Kayla thank you as well!!

Great service! They are very knowledgeable and very nice. Got five carpets and a wall hanging cleaned, including some moth damage stopped. They also repair, but my carpet would need repair that costs what the carpet does do they said if I liked it enough to keep it they could fixed the edges of holes to keep them from getting worse. I highly recommend them and will take my carpets there in the future too
